WASC Progresses Key Initiatives at July Meeting

Woorabinda, 24 July 2025 – The Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council convened for its Ordinary Meeting on 23 July 2025, with Mayor Terence Munns welcoming attendees and acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land.

The meeting showcased Council’s continued focus on strong governance, community engagement, and infrastructure development. Key highlights included:

  • Civic Engagement and Youth Development: Council endorsed a program to introduce Grade 6 students to local government operations through a half-day visit in Term 4, 2025. This initiative, led by Councillor Howard Booth, aims to inspire future community leaders.
  • Ministerial Visit and Funding Advocacy: Mayor Munns reported on a visit by the Hon. Fiona Simpson, Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, which included a tour of critical infrastructure and advocacy for $36 million in water treatment plant funding.
  • Adoption of Strategic Governance Frameworks: Council adopted the WASC Corporate Governance Framework and endorsed the development timeline for the 2025–2030 Corporate Plan, signalling a strong commitment to strategic planning and transparency.
  • Community and Cultural Initiatives: Councillors provided updates on local partnerships, youth sports programs, environmental health activities, and discussions on commemorating community heritage through public art.
  • Infrastructure and Services: Council approved the Woorabinda Walking Network Plan and noted progress reports in financial management, community services, construction activity, and compliance performance.
  • Policy Updates: Amendments to the Leasing Policy were adopted to improve oversight of commercial leases, and Council noted the finalisation of a new Corporate Credit Card Policy.
  • Regional Collaboration and Representation: Approval was given for Council representatives to attend the 129th LGAQ Annual Conference in October, and the August meeting was rescheduled to accommodate participation in the CQROC delegation to Brisbane.

The meeting concluded with a unified commitment to transparent governance, meaningful community programs, and sustainable development.
